Well some say that he was found floating on a lotus leaf in a tank in Benaras by a Muslim Weaver named Nima and his wife. They gave him the name of Kabir meaning the great one.

It was a strange thing that time that a Hindu teacher will accept a Muslim student, but the young Kabir had  creative ways to overcome all objections.

Ramanand Accepted Kabir as his Disciple:-

Kabir always wanted to become a disciple of Ramanand, But he was a Muslim and it is very impossible for him to be a disciple of Ramanand, a Hindu Saint. He tried a trick. The saint Ramanand daily went to take his bath. On this special day, Ramananda awoke before dawn and found his customary way down to the steps of the Ganges. As he was walking down the steps to the waters, a little hand reached out in the predawn morning and grabbed the saint's big toe. Ramananda was taken by surprise and he expressed his shock by calling out the name of God. Looking down he saw in the early morning light the hand of the young Kabir. After his bath in the early light he noticed that on the back of the little one's hand was written in Arabic the name Kabir. He adopted him as son and disciple and brought him back to his Ashrama, much to the disturbance of his Hindu students.

Kabir Philosophy:-

Kabir's poetry is the mirror of his philosophy about life. His sayings were based on the fact of reincarnation and karma. Kabir has clear idea of philosophy of life. He liked to live in a very simplistic manner. He had strong faith that God is unique. He wanted to say that God is only one while you are Hindu or Muslim. God is the creator of this beautiful world.

He criticized all sects openly. He gave a new direction to the Indian philosophy. He touches the soul of all in both simplicity and style way.

Kabir's Death:-

Kabir was died at Maghar near Gorakhpur. When he died, his disciples(Hindu and Muslim followers) started fighting for his body. the Muslims were wanting to claim the body for burial, the Hindus were wanting to cremate the body. Kabir appeared to the arguing disciples and told them to lift the cloth covering his body. When they lifted the cloth covering his body, they found fragrant flowers there instead of body. The flowers were divided between Hindu and Muslim followers, and the Muslims buried the flowers while the Hindus committed them to fire.

Kabir's Quotes:-
  • I am not a Hindu,
    Nor a Muslim am I!
    I am this body, a play
    Of five elements; a drama
    Of the spirit dancing
    With joy and sorrow
    .

  • If you don't break your ropes while you're alive do you think ghosts will do it after?

  • There's a moon in my body, but I can't see it!
    A moon and a sun.
    A drum never touched by hands, beating, and I can't hear it!

  • I do not quote from the scriptures;
    I simply see what I see.

  • When the bride is one
    with her lover,
    who cares about
    the wedding party?

  • Be strong then, and enter into your own body;
    there you have a sold place for your feet.
    Think about it carefully!
    Don't go off somewhere else!

  • Serve your God, who has come into this temple of life!
    Do not act the part of a madman, for the night is thickening fast.

  • Your Lord is near:
    yet you are climbing the palm-tree to seek Him

  • All know that the drop merges into the ocean, but few know that the ocean merges into the drop.

  • Student, tell me, what is God?
    He is the breath inside the breath.

  • Now I have no caste, no creed,
    I am no more what I am!

  • Listen to the secret sound, the real sound, which is inside you.
    The one no one talks of speaks the secret sound to himself,
    and he's the one who has made it all.

  • As long as a human being worries about when he will die, and what he has that is his,
    all of his works are zero.
    When affection for the I-creature and what it owns is dead,
    then the work of the Teacher is over.

  • The purpose of labor is to learn;
    when you know it, the labor is over.

  • Man, here is your worth,
    Your meat is of no use!
    Your bones cannot be sold
    For making ornaments,
    And your skin cannot be played
    On an instrument!
